Celebrating Hawaiian music and dance with concerts and competitions from September 19 through September 25, 2010, this is one of Kauai’s most entertaining festivals. This annual event is presented by the non-profit Maile Foundation which was created to provide events that educate, promote, preserve and perpetuate the Hawaiian culture through its varied activities and for all people.
The festival opens with a service on September 19 at the historical First Hawaiian Church in Kapa’a and a Hawaiian instrumental competition at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Poipu that evening at 6pm, $15.
September 20 is the Kauai composers contest and concert featuring original compositions by Kaua’i Composers who enter their music in 5 categories: Hawaiian, contemporary Hawaiian, open, youth and professional at the KCC Performing Arts Center at 7pm, $15 advance, $20 at the door.
An opportunity to experience the Hawaiian culture alive and well, is the Children’s/Youth Music Competition, allowing students in the Hawaiian Immersion School Programs to compete musically by grades. 9am, September 21 at the KCC Performing Arts Center.
A truly ‘home grown’ back yard style concert, the “Under the Palms Concert” is a special event and scholarship fundraiser September 22 from 6-9pm at the Aston Aloha Beach Resort – $12. Don’t be surprised to find some of Kauai’s finest musicians and hula dancers inspired to join in from the audience for an impromptu hula or song.
The week continues with solo and group hula competition in both kahiko (ancient) and awana (modern) styles. For a complete schedule, visit maliefoundation.com.
