Poipu Beach is one of Kauai’s most beloved South Shore beaches, known for its sunny weather, family-friendly swimming, snorkeling, and unforgettable sunsets. Located in the heart of Poipu, this iconic beach offers protected ocean areas, nearby dining, scenic coastal views, and easy access from many of the area’s most popular vacation resorts.
In 2026, Poipu Beach was named the #1 beach in the United States by coastal scientist Dr. Stephen Leatherman, widely known as “Dr. Beach,” further confirming its place as one of Kauai’s most beloved coastal destinations.
Enjoy one of the best beaches in America when you visit Poipu Beach. This jewel among Kauai beaches was honored by The Travel Channel as one of the top ten in the United States. It remains a Kauai family favorite and is popular with our Kauai vacation rental guests and Kauai webcam visitors. The sand is luxurious, Kauai sunset spectacular and ocean sports are plentiful. Nearby you will find our large selection of Kauai beachfront rentals, Kauai Resorts and many options at Poipu Kai.
Family-Friendly Swimming & Snorkeling
A rock jetty provides a safe shallow swimming pool for babies and children. The pool is one of the best year-round Kauai snorkeling spots on the island. You don’t have to go out far to see schools of brightly colored tropical fish which feed along the rocks and coral. The rock wall protects waders, snorkelers and swimmers from surf and currents. Kids of all ages can play in the water and on extensive grassy areas, and if that is not enough, can join fellow toddlers on the jungle gym.
Sea Turtles, Monk Seals & Sunset Views
The best snorkeling is to the right side of the point where you can snorkel with Hawaiian reef fish at one of the rare Hawaii tombolos. This Poipu sandbar connects from the beach to Nukomoi Point where Hawaiian monk seals are often seen. It is an interesting sensation walking on the tombolo and having waves come toward you on both sides. Late afternoons at Poipu Beach often bring calm ocean conditions, golden South Shore light, and the chance to spot Hawaiian green sea turtles resting along the shoreline.
Kauai Activities and Poipu Beach Suggestions
At Poipu Beach you can enjoy Kauai snorkeling, swimming, paddling, boogie-boarding, surfing and beach walks. This is also a perfect spot for watching Hawaii Humpback whales during the winter months and Hawaii sea turtles year round. There are public restrooms and showers as well as plenty of free parking too. For a fun Kauai dining experience, bring food from your Kauai vacation rental and enjoy an oceanfront lunch. Kauai weather at Poipu Beach is almost always sunny making it a good destination when it is raining elsewhere on island.
Safety Tips: The Poipu Beach shoreline is largely protected from large surf. We recommend that you talk to the lifeguard on duty for the most current safety information. Watch for strong currents and waves that can break on the reef. There is also sharp coral and slippery rocks outside of the protected area.
Adjacent to Poipu Beach Park is world famous Brennecke Beach, a favorite for bodysurfing and boogie boarding. Many of Poipu’s most popular vacation resorts, including Nihi Kai Villas, Kiahuna Plantation, and Pili Mai at Poipu, are located just minutes from the beach.
