Hanalei is easily the largest bay on the Garden Isle of Kauai, set between two large rivers – Hanalei River to the east and Wai’oli River to the west. The largest of the two rivers, the Hanalei River, also serves as a popular venue for recreational paddling, kayaking and fishing.
The summer season generally provides flat water for easy access swimming, sailing, paddling, while the winter season brings larger swells with high surf for those surf enthusiasts. For ocean safety, there are several lifeguard stations posted around the bay and it is always a smart idea to check with the local lifeguard on duty as to the current conditions of the day. Kauai Beach Tips at Hanalei.
Swim along the shore between the pier to the first lifeguard for a fantastic workout. For surfing, the best is on the east side of the bay. Beginners should try the middle of the bay during summer when the surf is smaller and gentler. The two mile stretch of white sandy beach is perfect for a walk during Kauai sunset…..what a wonderful way to end the day in paradise!
