Secret Beach dazzles many of our Kauai vacation rental guests with its size and picturesque location. Instead of a small beach at the end of a steep trail, you will find one of the longest and widest Kauai beaches. Sheer cliffs hug the coastline and drop sharply to its pristine golden sands lined with palms and refreshing waterfalls.
Off to the right is Kilauea Lighthouse shimmering white in the sun. Along the beach is a fine strand of trees providing shade and to the left are beautiful lava pools reminiscent of Queens Bath at Princeville Resort. Stay awhile and enjoy its seclusion on your Kauai vacation where time seems to stand still.
Secret Beach does not require strenuous Kauai hiking to reach but the trail is steep in places and closed toe shoes are recommended. There’s a chance in summer to swim here if the ocean is calm and to see fish in the lava pools. Continue your journey around the rock cliff and you will find a waterfall to rinse off. Be careful of slippery rocks and do not attempt this in high surf. During winter it’s a surfers’ paradise and a popular spot to see Hawaii whales.
Called Secrets by locals and Kauapea in Hawaiian, the word is definitely out about this beach that seems to have everything from lava pools, waterfalls and sandy beach. After enjoying the Kauai sun, stop at the town of Kilauea for informal Kauai dining. One of our favorite places is Kilauea Bakery known for their Tropical Danish, sticky buns and some of the best Kauai pizza. There is also Kauai Mini-Golf nearby which makes for a fun Kauai family activity.
Cautions: No lifeguard on duty or restrooms. Check ocean conditions carefully especially in winter. Wear sturdy shoes for the hike to the beach and the area around the lava pools. Be careful of slippery rocks. This is not considered a beach for swimming unless in summer and the surf is flat.
Directions: Located on North Shore Kauai between Kalihiwai Beach and Kilauea Point. Turn towards the ocean on Kalihiwai Road. There are actually two by that time. You want the eastern road which is second coming from our Princeville rentals and the first road for everyone else. Once on Kalihiwai Road, turn right on the first dirt road to the trailhead.
