Hoopii Falls
If you are looking for one of Kauai’s more accessible waterfall hikes, Hoopii Falls Trail is a good place to start. Located near Kapaa on Kauai’s East side, Hoopi Falls Trail is a 2.4 mile out and back trail with a fair amount of uphill hiking. Hoopii Falls Trail is a popular hiking trail, so do not expect to have the path all to yourself. Bring good hiking shoes or boots because this hike can be muddy and slippery. The trail leads you to two falls on the Kapaa Stream, which are great spots for photos.
Uluwehi Falls
Getting to Uluwehi Falls, also known as Secret Falls, is an adventure unlike any other. Reaching the falls requires both hiking and paddling, so it is recommended that you book a tour with a local guide. That said, if you want to do it alone, take your canoe or kayak yourself to the trailhead on the Wailua River. The falls are about 45 minutes from the trailhead, but keep in mind that conditions are often muddy and slippery. Whether you choose to go alone or with a guide, Uluwehi Falls is one of the most unique waterfall hikes on Kauai.
Waipoo Falls
Located in Waimea Canyon, Waipoo Falls is a magnificent 800-foot waterfall. If you do not feel up to hiking, you can observe the falls at several lookout points on Highway 550. However, if you want to get active, you can take a trail to Waipoo Falls, a 3.2-mile roundtrip hike that is considered easy. The Waipoo Falls Trail will take you through diverse settings, including forests and canyons, before eventually leading you to the falls.
Wailua Falls
Wailua Falls is undoubtedly the most famous waterfall on Kauai; the falls were prominently featured in the opening credits of the television show Fantasy Island. Another reason for its popularity is its accessibility; you do not have to hike to observe Wailua Falls’ beauty. While Wailua Falls may not have the hiking you are looking for, it is a great symbol of Kauai’s natural grandeur and makes for a memorable photo opportunity, so we would be remiss to leave it off of the list.
