Dream Vacation
I spent five glorious days here with three girlfriends. The condo was perfect and is literally the best location with most amazing views in the area. The kitchen was stocked with all of the supplies needed for us to cook most of our meals to enjoy on the ocean view lanai. We spent evenings lounging in the living room. The sectional sofa made this very comfortable. We loved the shampoo/conditioner being supplied, and especially because the products are quality. The beds were comfortable and the nice quality linens helped to keep us cool. We are planning a return trip very soon!

Good & Bad at Makahuena #5101
First, the location and view are unbeatable. Also, the condo layout is great, the in suite amenities good, lots of tableware and we truly enjoyed our two weeks. Now for the bad: the beds are brutal, I slept on the floor a couple of nights to ease my back, and my wife, as well as our guests (in their room) spent some nights tossing and turning. Secondly, the advertisement/information on this condo indicated there was a safe in the unit……..yes, but no key! We contacted the manager but they said they also did not have a key to provide access. Third, for $2800 US per week, a minor maid service to change sheets and towels would have been welcomed after the first week, hotels would have changed them every night. There was not even laundry detergent provided. When beach items are provided in a 2 bedroom unit, it would make sense to provide 4 of each item (only two beach chairs). Finally, there was no dresser in the spare room in which to place some clothing, not even night stands with a couple of drawers beside the beds, rather inconvenient. These are relatively minor items (except the beds) that are easily rectified and we would urge you to give them consideration

Aloha Rob, Mahalo for your review and comments. We apologize on the safe, it was from the previous manager. Please note, we have installed a new digital safe. Regular linen/towel changes are not standard in vacation rentals, but know we do offer the service if required. Just let us know ahead of time. We do provide laundry detergent and if we missed if on your stay, we apologize. We will pass on your notes about the furniture to the owner. Mahalo and we look forward to hosting you again. Mahalo and a hui hou.

beautiful location , great condo , best views around
Very much enjoyed our stay, probably one of the best locations we’ve stayed it in years. Like everyone else , wish there was a little easier way to get your luggage there. great views , great service , and everything you need to make a great stay.

Very good experience
Nice unit with great view. Only downside is that it was a long slog from the parking lot with our bags.
JP says
Mahalo James for the 5-star review. Sorry for any inconvenience on the walk to the unit. It is overlooking the ocean on the opposite side of the parking…away from the road, cars and noise and of course with the best view. Aloha and we look forward to hosting you again soon. A hui hou.

Spectacular views...
Check-in process very easy. Unit was spacious, clean, and quiet. The shutters on the windows could use runners at the bottom to fix them in place (they would sway in the wind and bang around). Also, a door stop for the 2nd bedroom would be useful as the wind would slam the door. We kept the doors inside open to help with the airflow through the house, so it would be quite the surprise when it suddenly slammed shut. There were a lot of stairs on the property that made it a bit difficult for my mother-in-law to get around, but she just went slow and did fine. The kitchen was well stocked with anything you might need to prepare meals, etc. The shampoo/soap provided was awesome. I have really long, thick hair, so having good shampoo/conditioner is a must. The soap smelled incredible too. Located very close to shopping, beaches, and other local attractions. Beautiful place with a comfy vibe. We spent every morning on the lanai watching sea turtles. We also saw dolphin from the lanai. Great spot for a romantic getaway, or a small family.
JP says
Mahalo April for you review and comments. We will check on the shutters to see what we can do and get a door stop. The trades can be quite breezy so great suggestion. Please give us a call next time and we can certainly guide you to some condos that are more easily accessible. Glad you like the Parrish Ocean product. We have it especially made in Italy for us. Check out our web site and you can order some for home. Thanks again and see you on island soon.

Beautiful view but needs AC, too many stairs
The check in experience was smooth. If you are elderly, I would not recommend this property for you as you must take your luggage up and down multiple steps to get to the unit. There is no AC, so you cannot escape the humidity or the heat. Finally, what really bugged me was that there is a pathway so other condo owners can walk down and sit on benches by the ocean. In doing so they can see into the bathrooms. There should be curtains. They have curtain rods, but no curtains on the upper windows in the two bathrooms. It is a beautiful view, but I would not stay here again, due to the lack of air conditioning. You always had to have fans going and never felt completely comfortable.
JP says
Mahalo for your review, but sorry to hear you will not stay here again. Please note some of the Makahuena have AC, so you can have that if if you require it. Typically, the trades keeps things cool, but we do understand we are int eh tropics and it can get warm. On the steps, it is a larger property and this unit is at property edge overlooking the ocean, the main selling point. Away from the road, cars and noise. Please note we have units that are right by the parking, but of course they will not have such a great view. Aloha.

Amazing Ocean View
This was our third visit to Kauai and our first time staying at Makahuena. The property had all the basic amenities. We couldn’t have asked for a better location as our unit, #5- 101 was more private located on the end with a stunning view of the ocean. We will be back next winter with some friends and plan on staying in same unit.
JP says
Mahalo Angelique. We look forward to hosting you and your friends next year. Aloha!

Gorgeous views! Beware no A/C...
We met old friends for a week in February. We all enjoyed whale watching (within 200 meters!) and evening sunsets from the lanai. You are about as ocean-front as you can get in this unit! While the cross-breezes were lovely in February, we had to close windows for security when out exploring during the day. So it was quite stuffy and very humid/damp-smelling when we returned. This would not be pleasant in the summer months. Condo has beach chairs, towels and coolers which are nice bonuses! Well-equipped for cooking and cocktails 🙂
Steve B. says
Great Condo with one of the best ocean views on the island.
Makahuena #5-101 puts you in the middle of the daily sundown social. Average attendance hovers around 20 and from day one you will meet both the long and short term crowd. Every stroll out to your lanai is an opportunity for a whale breech or a cruising dolphin pod. If you are staying at the Makahuena, stay on the front row! #5101.
JP says
Mahalo Steve for your review. Great that you have had some amazing whale and sunset shows and met some new friends. We look forward to hosting you again soon. Aloha and a hui hou!

We loved it so much we bought it!
We’ve been going to Kauai for 14 years. We always dreamed of buying a place. We’ve stayed all the normal high rated places from the Ultimate Kauai Guide. I have to say – this is the gem of the South Shore. We couldn’t believe how amazing the property is (recently refinished tennis courts, amazing pool spa area, new roofs on the units). But the view of this unit is stunning. You can literally see the Sunrise and the Sunset from the lawn area just outside this unit. During the winter months, the whale watching from the lanai is incredible. We hope you will enjoy your stay as much as we did. Aloha!
