Kalapaki Beach
Kalapaki Beach is used for all sorts of watersports, including surfing. The beach is guarded by breakwalls, ensuring that the wave action here is gentle at most times. Due to the mild wave conditions, Kalapaki Beach is one of the best spots to learn how to surf on Kauai. While Kalapaki Beach is a haven for surfing newcomers, it is still enjoyable for higher skill levels as well.
Hanalei Bay
Perhaps Kauai’s most famous surfing location, Hanalei Bay is a must-stop for surfers looking to catch some waves during the winter season. During the winter, large swells with high surf attract surfers to this popular spot. You can take advantage of the best surfing on the east side of the bay. During the summer, the surf is gentler, making it better for beginners, though we recommend newcomers stick to the middle of the bay.
Kealia Beach
You might recognize Kealia Beach; it is one of several Kauai film locations from the movie The Descendants. This scenic beach is a great spot for surfing, especially on the north side, where the waves are not as strong. We recommend sticking to the northern area by the jetty because rip currents are powerful and dangerous in high surf in more open spots.
