Poipu Beach Park is located on the sunny side of Kauai in the Poipu resort area and is a favorite spot for local families and visitors alike. Recently named one of America’s Best Beaches by The Travel Channel, it constantly ranks among the top 10 “best” beaches in the US.
A rock jetty provides a safe shallow swimming pool for babies and children year round. The pool is one of the best year-round snorkeling spots on Kauai with schools of bright colored tropical fish which feed along the rocks and coral. The rock wall protects waders, snorkelers and swimmers from surf and currents. Kids of all ages can play in the water, extensive grassy areas, and if that is not enough, can join fellow toddlers on the jungle gym.
Snorkeling is great around Nukomoi Point, one of the rare tombolos in Hawaii (you can see it on the upper left of the top photo). A tombolo is a narrow strip of land connecting two pieces of land. The last hurricane washed much of the sand away and it has yet to fully recover, but it still is a wonderful place to explore.
Perfect for…snorkeling, swimming, paddling, boogie-boarding, surfing, beach walks, family picnics and BBQs.
Hazards…although there is a lifeguard on duty and shoreline is mostly protected from large surf, dangerous conditions can exist. Strong currents and waves can break on reef and there is sharp coral and slippery rocks outside of the protected area.
Adjacent to Poipu Beach Park is world famous Brennecke Beach, a favorite for bodysurfing and boogie boarding.
Driving directions to Poipu Beach…from Koloa town, head south on Poipu Road. Continue along on Poipu Road (HI-520) until you merge into the “Welcome to Poipu Beach” round-about. Continue around the round-about and follow the sign “Poipu Beach” (third exit) and continue for approximately two miles. Turn right on Hoowili Road and go approximately 0.2 miles and you will dead end at Poipu Beach Park. There is free all day parking lots on the left and right.
