Our enchanting island is one of the last places on earth to see the year end. If you’re on Kauai for New Year’s Eve get ready for a dazzling firework display in the tropical night sky. Our Kauai vacation rental guests can join the revelry at Poipu Beach Park.

Fireworks in Hawaii have become a tradition to ring in a prosperous New Year with a loud bang heard across the Pacific. Parrish Kauai is pleased to be one of the lead sponsors for this annual celebration with the Poipu Beach Resort Association and other local businesses.

The big event starts with four hours of live music by Revival, Sashamon, Papa`a Bay Boys and Alyson’s Anthem starting at 5pm. After a magical Kauai sunset the crowds will gather for the firework show at 9:15pm. Food is available for purchase or plan a memorable night of Kauai dining at South Shore restaurants like Red Salt and Tortilla Republic. Our guest concierge can check seating times for you. Another option is to search on Open Table for choices remaining on this popular evening.

If you decide to buy fireworks to have your own show, please protect our island and ocean by removing any firework debris when you’re through. Fireworks are popular in local neighborhoods too and the sky at midnight can be a mixture of noise, smoke and color seen around the island.

Wherever you celebrate New Year’s Eve you can keep Aloha in your heart and wish everyone Hau`oli Makahiki Hou. “Makahiki” means year in Hawaiian and refers to an ancient four month celebration of resting and feasting. I think that’s what everyone will be doing on New Year’s Day!

“Hau `oli Makahiki Hou” to you from all of us at The Parrish Collection Kauai.

Tortilla Republic features Fine Kauai Dining

Tortilla Republic recently opened near our Poipu vacation rentals in the Shops at Kukui`ula. I’ve become a big fan of its cool vibe and sophisticated flavors served up with a fresh island twist. Being that Tortilla Republic has become one of the trendiest spots for Kauai dining, it was the perfect choice for our recent holiday party.

The two levels of the stylish restaurant have open walls allowing the tropical trade winds to blow in, perfecting the relaxing setting. Starting our evening was a spectacular Kauai sunset which created a wonderful warm glow throughout the restaurant. The ground floor has a bar and more casual menu choices. The upstairs also has a cool bar as well and a more fine dining atmosphere including the formal Guadalajara styled room where we settled in for our Holiday Party.

The “Hydration” margaritas were popular with everyone. They are not overly sweet and have a more natural taste since they use coconut water and house-made lime sweet syrup. There are 50 varieties of tequila for aficionados. If you’d like something different ask for my personal creation with Grey Goose vodka. “Hydration” choices include the Skinny made with grapefruit juice, Cucumber Lavender using house-made lavender syrup and Thai margarita made with muddled kaffir lime leaves.

Table-side guacamole service is unique and one of the best you’ll find. Pedro mixed and prepared before us chilies, herbs and spices all tailored to our taste along with some fun commentary. There were big chunks of local avocado in the guacamole and it can be made with fresh crab meat if you chose. Three chili salsas were left for us to try and warm house made chips.

Menu standouts included crunchy Jicama tacos and well conceived lamb enchiladas. Chicken flautas were excellent too as were local fish Ahi tacos. Each healthy menu item was made with the best local ingredients. This is the best contemporary chic-Mexican food you’ll find here in the Pacific.

Churros and chocolate flan with a hint of chili ended a memorable evening. After a gift exchange we topped off the night with a plate of Mexican Wedding cookies and a walk around the fabulous Shops at Kukui`ula featuring art galleries, boutiques and clothing stores.

Details: Tortilla Republic’s Margarita Bar is open 11am to 9pm, Monday-Thursday and closes at 10pm on Friday and Saturday. Their Grill serves nightly from 5:30pm to 9pm, Monday-Thursday and until 10pm on Friday and Saturday. Closed on Sunday. For reservations check with our guest concierge or call 808-742-8884.

We invite you to share your best Kauai dining experiences with us. If you have had the pleasure of dining at Tortilla Republic, be sure to comment.

Hawaiian Monk Seal at Mahaulepu BeachNot only is Maha`ulepu a great place for Kauai hiking, it’s also a heritage site revealing 5 million years of timeless Kauai history. This living museum and research area is the habitat for many notable plants and diverse wildlife including Hawaiian Monk Seals. It’s just a short walk or drive from many of our Poipu vacation rentals.

Watch endangered Humpback Whales. Visibility from the dunes at Maha`ulepu makes a perfect site for viewing. Humpbacks migrate back to the islands from Alaska from November through March. The warm, shallow waters around the Hawaiian Islands are one of the world’s premiere habitats for them and the only place in the U.S. where Humpbacks reproduce.

Honu or Green Sea Turtle can be seen along the Mahaulepu coastline surfacing for air. Named after its green-colored fat tissue which comes from the limu (algae) in their diet, the life span for the Honu is around 80 years. They can grow up to four feet in length and weigh up to 400 pounds.

Kolea at Mahaulepu BeachKolea or Pacific Golden Plover is a charming Kauai indigenous bird frequently seen at Maha`ulepu Beach.  They are also found on front lawns, ballparks, parking lots and beaches. At night, they mostly roost on rooftops. Kolea are found on Kauai year-round except during the summer when they migrate for a two-day, 3,000 mile trip to Alaska. The amazing Kolea can fly for long periods at 50-60 miles per hour and will often live over 20 years. For those here on Kauai for prolonged visits will be treated with the Kolea’s striking change in plumage.

Hawaiian Monk Seal (Ilioholoikauaua) is everyone’s favorite sighting. Fewer than 1,500 Monk Seals exist today but fortunately it’s fairly common to see them basking in the sun at Maha`ulepu Beach. They rest on Kauai beaches after foraging for food in the ocean. Hawaii state law prohibits disturbing a Hawaiian Monk Seal or approaching them within 100 feet.

Look for Hinahina Kahakai Pua, an indigenous, succulent-like plant. It grows on rocky, sandy coastal island areas except for the islands of Lanai and Kaho`olawe. The fragrant flowers of the Hinahina range from white to a pale purple with a yellow center. It is used medicinally to treat weaknesses in the body, dry throat and asthma and various lung troubles.

Kiawe tree was planted as part of a reforestation program at the Makauwahi Sinkhole. This deciduous tree can grow up to 60 feet tall. The entire population of kiawe trees in Hawaii came from a single tree planted in Honolulu. Kiawe is used for fuel and charcoal and gives a flavor similar to mesquite when burned.

Maha`ulepu is a rich source of rare and impressive animal and plant life on Kauai.  Because of everything which can be seen, learned and felt here, Maha`ulepu must be preserved.  Today it continues to be a favorite discovery spot for locals and visitors alike.

Where to Start Your Hike: You can either drive to Maha`ulepu Beach, it’s at the end of the dirt road past the Grand Hyatt, or walk from Shipwreck Beach along the coastline to Maha`ulepu.

Anne looks forward to hearing your tips and questions in the comment section.
