My Perfect Fourth of July on Kauai

I was so excited because I was born & raised here, for most of my life but I have never ever gone trout fishing in Koke’e. When I was younger, my older brother, sister & I would go hunting for everything from guppies & swordtails to catfish, tadpoles & frogs. I remember that I couldn’t wait to get home from school so I could head out with my net & fishing pole to Kapa’a Canal, behind our house. It was actually a river/stream that fed into the canal. My brother, Wayne built a small dock so we could sit & fish for whatever would bite the earthworms that we dug up from our yard. He even built a canoe out of totang (corrugated tin) so we could paddle & fish throughout the stream. (The canoe didn’t last very long. It sunk when we had a big storm & the river rose quite a bit.)

Anyway, we woke up early & met our niece & her family then headed up to Koke’e. It was about 80 degrees in Kekaha and it got continually colder as we headed up the mountain. I watched the temperature drop to 65 degrees so luckily, I had gotten dressed for the colder temperature. It was such a beautiful morning.

We had to go off-roading for a little bit and arrived at the reservoir. The reservoir was a lot bigger and much more pretty & peaceful than I had imagined. Trout season had opened in mid June so it wasn’t as packed as it had been, the first couple of weekends. Bad news was that our grand-niece had gotten so grossed out when she had seen the worms that she had left the worms, back at the house. So all we had to fish with was a dough recipe that nephew/Gabriel had made and salmon eggs that he bought at Walmart. To make a long story short, we had 7 people in our party & not one of us caught a fish with the bait. It was pretty depressing to see the water “boil” right next to my bait & not get a single bite. All in all, we all ended up with sunburn because the air was so cool with overcast skies. That, plus over excitement made us forget about sun block but no matter, we had a lot of fun.

We ate our bento (lunch) then headed back down the mountain. Of course, it started to get hot again. So we went home to rest then met back up at Kekaha Ball Park for the 4th of July festivities. The Kekaha community like all others on Kauai is close knit & everyone knows one another. It was so wonderful to “talk story” with people in such a relaxed & kick back atmosphere. One gets so busy & caught up in our daily lives that we can greet each other in passing.

They had a booth with paraphernalia from old Kekaha & the Sugar Plantation days. It was extremely interesting to see old artifacts that were used in everyday life. There was an old Singer sewing machine, lunch “kau kau” tin, irons, dishes, bottles and so much more. They even had extremely old magazines. The display was put together by Larry Manuel. He’s collected the items throughout the years & people have also donated items. My husband & I even donated an old Convection Oven that we had found in our house. I don’t know exactly how old it is but I can honestly say that I’ve never even seen
my Mother use an oven like that.

The food booths had a variety of great food. My personal favorites are “pronto pups” which are like corn dogs but are dipped in a pancake like batter then deep fried and “flying saucers” which is sloppy joe mixture between 2 pieces of buttered bread toasted over a fire. The cool part is all the proceeds are to benefit the local children & their causes.

There were various talented musicians & dancers to entertain the crowd & even Kauai’s own Mayor Bernard Carvalho sang a couple of songs. The fireworks display was absolutely beautiful and the crowd was just in awe. It was an absolutely perfect ending to my 4th of July.
